Identification

11-12cm

  • Green above
  • Yellow belly
  • Pink sides
  • Red throat
  • Red mandible
  • Some photos show a red eye ring

Similar species

Narrow-billed Tody is partly overlapping in range

Distribution

Caribbean: found in arid scrub and woodlands of Hispaniola and Gonâve Island.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Habitat

Semi arid areas, scrub, mangroves, coffee plantations and forests from sea level to 1700m.

Behaviour

Breeding

It digs a 30cm burrow in a river bank for its nest. The clutch consists of 3-4 white eggs.

Diet

The diet includes insects.

Vocalisation

Call: whistle terp terp terp.
