Identification

  • Black underparts with white barring

Male

  • Crown
  • Brown forehead
  • Yellow centre
  • Red at rear

Female

  • Yellow crown
  • Black moustache

Distribution

Asia: found in northern Baluchistan and western Himalayas (north-eastern Afghanistan to northern India and central Nepal).

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Subspecies D. a. incognitus is not recognised by all authorities and D. a.conoveri us generally considered invalid[2].

Habitat

Mixed forests and montanes.

Behaviour

Breeding

It nests in cavities.
