Chrysocolaptes lucidus

Identification

Distribution

Endemic to the Philippines (Bohol, Leyte, Samar, Biliran and Panaon, Mindanao and Samal)

Taxonomy

Three subspecies recognized:

  • C. l. rufopunctatus in east-central Philippines
  • C. l. montanus on Mindanao (southern Philippines)
  • C. l. lucidus on Zamboanga Peninsula (western Mindanao) and Basilan

It was formerly included in Greater Flameback (the enlarged species called Chrysocolaptes lucidus)

Habitat

Forests.

Behaviour

Frequents the canopy and middle story. Usualy in small noisy groups up to ten, even at nest. Sometimes solitary.
