Identification
12 - 14cm.
Male
- Mainly black with greenish gloss
- White centre of breast and belly
- Small white patch at base of primaries
- Pale blue-grey to whitish, thick bill
Female
- Olive brown above
- Pale olive brown breast
- Buffy white lower breast and belly
- Dull olive bill
Juveniles undescribed.
Similar species
Differs from Black-and-white Tanager in smaller size and lack of grey on rump and flanks.
Distribution
South America: found in south-western Brazil (Goias and Mato Grosso do Sul, redisccovered in 2003)
There is an unconfirmed report of a female from Bolivia.
Rare and very local. Classified as critically endangered.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
Has been considered conspecific with Black-and-white Tanager.
Habitat
Very waterlogged gallery forest with many palms and bamboos in the understorey.
Behaviour
Diet
Feeds on insects and seeds.
Forages singly or in pairs, mostly below 5m in shrubs.
Breeding
No information. Presumably a resident species.

Song: tchi, tchi, tchi, tchi, tchi, tchirrrrrrrrrrr, tzarrrrrrrrrrr, zíiiiiiiiiiiiiii.
