Dark-backed Wood Quail - BirdForum Opus

Location: Paz de Las Aves Private Reserve, near Mindo, Ecuador
Odontophorus melanonotus

Identification

Length 23-25.5cm (9-10in). Upperparts dark brown. Throat and breast bright rufous, belly brown with light streaking.

Distribution

Colombia and northwest Ecuador, between 1200 and 2700m.

Taxonomy

Monotypic.

Habitat

Subtropical forest floor in dense tangled undergrowth.

Behaviour

Forages in small groups on the forest floor, rarely coming out into the open. Most often encountered when close approach forces an explosive flushing, a short flight, then disappearance into dense foliage again. Frequently heard, seldom seen.
