16-17cm (6-6¾ in)

  • Large bill
  • Notched tail

Distribution

Asia: China, Tibet, Nepal, India, Eastern and Western Himalayas, Bhutan
Southeast Asia: Indochina, Myanmar

Subspecies

There are 2 subspecies[1]:

  • C. e. edwardsii:
  • Western China (south-eeastern Tibet to western Sichuan and southern Gansu)
  • C. e. rubicundus:

Habitat

They can be found in the undergrowth of montane juniper and small rhododendron forests.

Behaviour

Diet

Their diet consists mostly of small seeds, and some fruit such as crab apples.
