Identification

Distribution

Endemic to east-central Madagascar.

Taxonomy

Sometimes placed in genus Pseudocossyphus.

Subspecies

Three to four subspecies recognized:

  • M. s. sharpei:
  • M. s. bensoni:
  • M. s. erythronotus:
  • M. s. salomonseni:

Bensoni and erythronotus were formerly considered to be full species, however recent resarch is not supporting this. Erytrhonotus was also considered to be a subspecies of Littoral Rock Thrush.

Habitat

Rocky highland areas (bensoni) and highland rain forests.
