Subspecies
There are 6 subspecies[1]:
- H. a. floccus
- H. a. galindoi
- 'extreme eastern Panama (Cerro Pirre)
- H. a. caucensis:
- Western and central Andes of Colombia
- H. a. aureliae:
- Eastern Andes of Colombia and (?) east slope of central Andes
- H. a. russata:
- Eastern slope of Andes of Ecuador
- H. a. cutucuensis:
- Mountains of eastern Ecuador (Cordillera de Cutucú)
Habitat
Wet and humid montane and pre-montane subtropical forests and forest edges.
Behaviour
Diet
Their main diet consists of nectar taken from a wide range of tubular (particularly red) flowers, trees and shrubs. They defend their territory very aggressively.
Breeding
Their cup-shaped nest is constructed from dead leaves; it is lined with hair, moss and stems of maple leaves.
