Identification

Extinct.

Distribution

Formerly Laysan Island (Hawaii). Extirpated from Laysan by 1923 due to habitat destruction by introduced rabbits. An attempt to save the species by introducing them to Midway Island ended in disaster when rats were introduced to Midway in 1942, during World War II. The last Laysan Rail was seen in 1944 on Eastern Island, Midway.

Taxonomy

A monotypic species.
Also placed in genus Porzana.

Habitat

Grass and thickets.
