Heliangelus clarisse

Identification

9.4 cm. Dark green above, dusky crown with emerald green frontlet, black ear coverts, bold white spot behind the eye, glittering pinkish-purple throat, breast and belly iridescent green mixed with grey. Females resemble males but are duller.

Distribution

Colombia and Venezuela

Taxonomy

Formerly included in Amethyst-throated Sunangel.

Subspecies

Two subspecies are recognized[1].

  • H. c. violiceps
  • Sierra de Perijá (Colombia/Venezuela border)
  • H. c. clarisse
  • Eastern Andes of Colombia and adjacent western Venezuela

Habitat

Cloud forest edges and sometimes more open areas in humid mountains at elevations of 1800-3600 m asl.

Behaviour

Diet includes nectar and insects.
