Alternative name: Red Turtle Dove.

Identification
23cm. The male's head is blue-grey, with a black collar on the nape. Its mantle, back and wing coverts and underparts are red. Its flight feathers are black, its tail is grey with black sides. Its bill is black and its legs and feet are a purple-black. The female is brown. Its call is cru-u-u-u-u or goo-goo-goo.

Polytypic. Consists of two subspecies.
Habitat
Open country, trees, scrub and forests.
Behaviour
It eats rice, maize, seeds of grasses and herbs as well as buds and young leaves. It is ground feeder.
Its nest is flimsy, placed high in a tree. Usually 2 eggs are laid.
