Chaetocercus jourdanii

Identification

7 cm, bill 1,3 cm
Male with gorget rosy magenta or purple, bordered below by white pectoral band.

Distribution

South America: found in Colombia and Venezuela.

Taxonomy

Subspecies

There are 3 subspecies[1]:

  • C. j. jourdanii:
  • C. j. rosae:
  • Mountains of northern Venezuela (Zulia to Distrito Federal)
  • C. j. andinus:
  • Andes of north-eastern Colombia to western Venezuela (Lara to Táchira)

Habitat

Humid and wet forest, flower gardens. Observed at heights around 900 - 2500 m.

Behaviour

Flight

Looks like a bee in flight.
