Identification
9–10 cm (3½-4 in)
Male nominate
- Dark grey overall plumage
- Darker wings
- Black throat and upper breast
- White interscapular patch usually hidden
- White spots on wings
Female
- Olive-brown upperparts
- Buffish underparts
- Pale throat
Juvenile male: darker, duller and greyer than the female
Distribution
Southern Mexico to western Ecuador and eastern Peru.

Habitat
They are to be found in the understory of foothill and montane evergreen forests; also in nearby second growth woods.
Behaviour
Diet
There is little information published, but they are known to eat insects and spiders.
Breeding
They create a deep cup nest from plant fibres and rhizomes. It is suspended from a thin twig not far from the ground. The clutch consists of 2 reddish-brown white eggs, which is incubated by both adults and they both feed the nestlings.
