Identification

9–10 cm (3½-4 in)
Male nominate

  • Dark grey overall plumage
  • Darker wings
  • Black throat and upper breast
  • White interscapular patch usually hidden
  • White spots on wings

Female

  • Olive-brown upperparts
  • Buffish underparts
  • Pale throat

Juvenile male: darker, duller and greyer than the female

Southern Mexico to western Ecuador and eastern Peru.

Taxonomy

Subspecies

There are 3 subspecies:

  • M. s. schisticolor:
  • Extreme south-eastern Mexico (Chiapas) to western Ecuador (south to Loja)
  • M. s. sanctaemartae:
  • M. s. interior:
  • Andean slopes from eastern Colombia to southern Peru (Puno)

Habitat

They are to be found in the understory of foothill and montane evergreen forests; also in nearby second growth woods.

Behaviour

Diet

There is little information published, but they are known to eat insects and spiders.

Breeding

They create a deep cup nest from plant fibres and rhizomes. It is suspended from a thin twig not far from the ground. The clutch consists of 2 reddish-brown white eggs, which is incubated by both adults and they both feed the nestlings.
