Nystalus maculatus

18–19 cm (7-7½ in)

  • Red bill
  • Yellowish-brown lower throat and collar
  • White breast and belly with black spots
  • Spotted back

It is similar in size to the White-eared Puffbird (Nystalus chacuru).

South America: found in Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina.

Taxonomy

Subspecies

There are 2 subspecies[1]:

  • N. m. maculatus:
  • North-eastern and central Brazil (to south-western Mato Grosso)
  • N. m. striatipectus:

Habitat

Monte Desert. Subtropical and tropical Xeriphytic scrub forests and dry savanna. Observed at heights around 1,037 m

Behaviour

Diet

The diet consists mostly of insects such as beetles and small amphibians.

Breeding

The nest is a hole excavated in a bank or flat ground.

Vocalisation

A tremulous tewre-tewtewre-tewtewre.
