Identification

15 cm (6 in): short and slightly rounded tail

  • Golden yellow crown
  • Dark brown head and throat
  • Heavy streaks on breast
  • Dark brown upperparts with fulvous streaks
  • Buffy underparts with dark brown streaks
  • Brownish-black, short, stout bill

Female

  • Buffish throat breast and flanks with heavy brown streaks
  • Heavily streaked crown
  • Dark-brown ear-coverts
  • Yellowish supercilium
  • Yellow patch on the side of the neck
  • White chin, upper throat and belly
  • Pale flesh-coloured bill.

Distribution

Reedbeds, marsh lands, agricultural areas and rice paddies.

Behaviour

Diet

Their diet consists mostly of seeds, particularly grass seed.

Breeding

They nest in small colonies in reed beds. The globe-shaped nest has a long entrance tunnel. It is woven from grass and plant fibres.

Vocalisation

A soundscape where many males were engaged in nest building and displaying as well. A reedbed in a wetland provided a colonial roosting site for a group of Streaked Weaver.

Recorded during nesting period, close to reed growth, this is audio of one male, giving 5 types of calls : single and twin, well separated calls, rapid alarm calls(2 types), given in brief flight, and musical call/song, coming back to the same perch, all recorded in continuity.
