Alternative name: Blue Manakin

Chiroxiphia caudata

Identification

Bright blue body, black wings, tail and head, red cap. The far duller female is greenish overall. Juvenile males resemble the adult female, but gradually develop first the red crown, then the black face-sides, and finally the remaining plumage of the adult male.

Distribution

North-eastern Argentina, southern and south-eastern Brazil, and Paraguay.

Habitat

Moist lowland forests and montanes.

Behaviour

The males form leks and perform an intricate courtship dance before a female.
