Identification

17–22·8 cm (6¾-9 in) including length of bill at 9-11 cm
It is the only species of bird to have a bill longer than the rest of its body.

South America: found in Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru and north-eastern Bolivia.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Habitat

Temperate montane forest edges and gardens. Observed at heights between 2100 and 4000 m.

Behaviour

Diet

The diet consists the nectar of flowers (generally though not exclusively) with long corollas.

Breeding

There is very little information available. It's possible they nest high in trees.
