50cm (19¾ in), including a long tail.

  • Grey upperparts with brown spots
  • Brown head with silver streaks
  • Dark brown crown, lores , chin, throat and cheeks
  • Erectile nuchal crest
  • White underparts heavily streaked with brown
  • Bright yellow bill
  • White wing bar shows in flight.

Sexes are identical
Immature birds have a black woolly head without silver streaking.

Distribution

West Africa: found in acacia savanna of Senegambia to Central African Republic and western Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Habitat

Open woodland, savanna and cultivated areas.

Behaviour

They construct a platform nest in a tree. The clutch contains 2-3 eggs.
