This osprey had just hit the water and if memory serves me correctly he bit off a little more than he could chew. the fish won this battle.

Let me be the first to congratulate you on the best photo of the year so far. I love it. Were you ready for the shot and did you see the bird disappear under water.

Neil, Yes i was following the bird all the way down trying to get the shot just before they hit the water. Yes i saw him disappear, this was right after he came up and began to try and fly. It is not uncommon for the fish in this spot to spin the osprey around 2 times in a complete 360 before they try to fly. A lot of times the fish is simply to large. Thanks for your comment.

Paul, what an amazing shot. You ought to enter it for this months comp, also if I knew how,I would put it in the Favourite shot thread, but hopefully someone else may do just that.

Christine, thanks, check the photo category and you'll see that i did enter it.

This is an outstanding picture! Anyone that takes photos of Osprey knows how hard it is to get good shots without blowing out the whites. Very nicely done! I've been trying for three weeks to get the same picture you were trying for. I have a Nikon D100 and have become painfully aware of the shutter lag.

Hey bill, the shutter lag on the rebel is a pain also, here's the best dive shot i've gotten so far. Not very close unfortunately. I'm going to need a 1dmkII with that 8.5fps to get one just as it hits the water.

Nice dive shot. I have several at about the same distance but I've not been able to get the focus as good as yours. The place where I take mine has a high contrast background that the Osprey crosses as it dives and messes up my auto focus and exposure. I been locking it but it's hard to guess where the best point will be. The fish have stopped running in the river so I guess I'll have to wait until next year to try again.
