Yorkshire Birding (63 Viewers)

Just a quick question - we're planning a trip to Adel Dam tomorrow morning but just read a on a guide that the reserve is usually locked. Is this an old guide or is it only open at certain times? Also is it easiest to access from the Golden Acre side or the Arthington Rd side? Thanks

No key needed nowadays. I usually park in the lay-by on the top side of the park - presume this must be Arthington Road.

Thanks for the speedy reply, I knew i'd get help on here :t: . I didn't think i'd seen anyone mention a key before. Will be up there as early as I can get the family up!

Got to flam at 6.30 -Hobby in off straight away. Was notified of Ortolan's continued presence and went to see that. Got back to the seawatching and managed Cory's Shearwater and RN Grebe in next to no time. Brilliant.

I returned for a second go at the Ortolan this afternoon with Sarah in tow. Met John and his better half and after an hour of looking, I decided to leave as my parking ticket was about to run out (and I had promised to visit some shops).

Luckily the bunting was found seconds later just along the path and I was able to enjoy brief but great views.

A good list from Old Moor as normal;

2 Garganey, 1 Peregrine, 4 Kestrel, 5 Sparrowhawk, 1 Buzzard, 1 Barn Owl, 2 Curlew, 1 Ruff, 4 Greenshank, 3 Green Sand, 1 Common Sand, 20 Black Tailed Godwit, 14 Dunlin, 1 Ringed Plover, 115 Golden Plover, Too many Lapwing to count ! 5 Snipe, 2 Kingfisher, 1 Yellow Wagtail plus the more common residents too of course.

A Reed Warbler feeding 2 juveniles was nice to see, also a Great Crested Grebe was carrying a fledgling on its back.

Todays highlight was a small raptor which settled for a good couple of minutes on a post and was identified by a guy in the hide as being a Merlin !!!

It was apparently spotted the day before too.

Another first for my growing list !!

Not had the chance to go birding in a long time due to work commitments, got up "bright & early" today, well I thought I had! Went sea watching, Flambourgh, arrived at 08:40, had brief views (very brief, not enougth for a "tick") of the Ortolan Bunting, however was looking forward to a sea watch.....yep as stated by James (aka Hotspur) it was mainly all over by 9am.... looked for the Bunting again, not a sniff....drove home. 3pm Bunting reported on the pager, as showing well at Flambourgh, so back in the car and back to Flambourgh.......again dipped.

Almost forgot how much fun birding can be ;)

Oh nearly forgot, Some "Computer Hacking Git" hacked into my website today and wiped my home page and contacts page....

Ever had the feeling you should have stayed in bed! :-O

The local TV forecast tonight had light northerlies for Tues & Weds, what does the magic seaweed say? Is it looking good for Thursday?

I watched it from 3 till 3:30, and it was showing well, but just after it was flushed by a walker, and landed closer to me (for a change) on the coastal path, the final push (dog) it flew low south ...

On the Head late morning trying to get the Bunting for a friend. Too many none birders! Had good views of Osprey at Tophill Low this afternoon as some compensation.

Forcast for later part of the week is looking got for the coast. If you are thinking of coming to Spurn this week end make it Saturday.
Unfortunatly there is a boat race in the Humber and I have been advised we may be very busy.
Once the parking on the point is full no further cars will be allowed down the point and all cars after that parked of the reserve.

Also the main road through Hull past the marine is closed for a period both days so prepare for a trip through the estates.

You'll be overtaking me very soon at this rate...! Keep me informed if the merlin becomes a regular; despite my frequent moorland forays it's probably my biggest bogey these days :(

To add to this if you are thinking of Blacktoft on Saturday (not that you would), the tour of Britain is passing through so there will be closed roads and lots of traffic in the Goole area.

Flamborough

1 Wheatear, 3 Whinchat and a juvenile male Stonechat in the gorse field up at the lighthouse, i had a quick glimpse of the ortolan as it flushed up in front of me about 15 yards away, hovered briefly on a bramble stem then took of at a rate of knots, and flew across a field and seemed to dive into cover in the same gorse field
