    Costa Rica, 3 birds

I've a friend now living in Costa Rica who enjoys sending me pictures to ID. I'm still learning about these central american birds so any help is appreciated!

    Costa Rica, 3 birds

Hi all, I'm trying to ID all three birds at this feeder in the Orosi Valley, Costa Rica. It looks like a Buff-Throated Saltator to the left, and a Scarlet Rumped Tanager to the right. What is the brownish one on the lower left?

One Day in San Diego County....

I have the same question. I have a day to bird in the San Diego area in two weeks and I can see there are many fine spots. Any advice from the community on birding areas will be greatly appreciated!

    Costa Rica, female something?

Hi all, A friend of mine has moved to the Orosi Valley by Cartago in Costa Rica. The photo was taken Jan 25, 2012. So far I've done well ID-ing birds at his feeder, but I might loose a round of our game with this one. : ) I would appreciate any help in identifying it. THanks!

Which Bird do you Least Like?

Really? Seemed a pleasant enough fellow. I've never heard of him hogging a bird feeder or ousting Bluebirds from their homes the way the House Sparrows do sometimes.

    Your Most Recent "Life" Bird

It's been a while since I posted, but this was a treat for me: Cerulean Warbler, Sept. 9 2009. And to top it off, he was in the shrubs off our driveway with a couple of Redstarts and a Red Eyed Vireo. It was a very nice way to start the day.

    Golden-winged Warbler - Finally!!!

What a wonderful sight this morning, my first Golden-wing Warbler! He was courteous enough to announce himself by singing the traditional bee-bzz-bzz song, and then I was able to watch him on and off for about the next 20 minutes. It is true that north of here Golden-wings can still be found...

NC USA what is this lil guy?

Yellow-rumped (aka Myrtle) Warbler. They usually stay around for the winter even up here in northern NJ so keep eye out for more in your area. I enjoy seeing them in the dreary winter months. Alison

    White-throats vs Swamp Sparrows?

Thanks all! I can see from the McGill pictures that it's the hatch year tanstripes that I wanted to confirm. (Thanks for the links JanJ!) The adults I can distinguish, but there are juv/hatch year versions of both sparrows here currently. An overcast november day makes it a challenge too...

    White-throats vs Swamp Sparrows?

The White-throated Sparrows are back here in NW New Jersey and I'm trying to fine tune spotting the difference between the tan stripe 1st year White-throats from the Swamp Sparrows. Do the White-throats always have the yellow lores? Is the Swamp Sparrow more gray even around the back of the...

    new one for me!

Yesterday I went out for my morning birdwalk and a Mourning Warbler popped out of a pine about 10 feet in front of me and gave me a perfect view of it's lovely self before going to hide in the weeds. That's a new tick for me! I guess I'm so thrilled because it was right out in my front yard. I...

What is your approach to birding?

I agree that edges of woodland - especially just inside the woods can be quite full of birds. I am also very dependent on my ears - if I hear any thing new or a commotion I stop. If I hear chickadees I usually stop and wait. I've noticed that different types of bird will often group together in...
