Red Kites in Oxon & ideas for W. Sussex

The area around Princes Risborough is a fantastic place to see Red Kites, they're pretty much guaranteed if you travel along the M40 in that area, I was there a couple of weeks ago. (My partner had an interview in Monks Risborough and I went along for the ride - I'm glad I did!). We saw six...

    Hedgehog!!

Awwww it looks like Mr.Spock, bless it. I do like hedgehogs, they're funny little creatures. Birdman - I really hadn't realised that there were no hedgehogs in the US!!! Never thought about it....I knew there were other species, but just didn't realise where they all lived. Well, you learn...

    Food and feeders

Geoff - a very greedy animal! Grey Squirrels turn up just about anywhere, I've often wondered how on earth they've managed it. They always have a good go at destroying my feeders though, so if I see any whilst I'm outside I throw teatowels at them! lol Ridiculous I know, they just come back then...

    New Member Saying Hello

A very belated welcome from me Gill! There are so many posts to read that I sometimes spend an age on here and still haven't typed a word! Geraldine - one of the best places to see Red Squirrels is Freshfields forest near Southport in Merseyside. I know that's a long way for you to go, but if...

    Hummingbird Hawkmoth

I tried, albeit unsuccessfully, to take a photo of a Silver-Y a few days ago, but it kept flitting about from one place to another. The lovely silvery y-shape on their wings is really easy to see, but even the dark background colour of the wings is really beautifully marked. Ridge - I can't...

    Hummingbird Hawkmoth

Convolvulus is one species I'd really like to see! I used to get a lot of Poplar Hawkmoths in my garden when I lived in Lancashire, and loads of Red, and Yellow, Underwings. I still see the Large Yellows, but no reds. I had read in one of my books that Red Underwings are not found at all in the...

    Food and feeders

Glad to see someone else has seen them on feeders too! We had quite a lot of Siskins on the peanut feeder earlier this year, lots of Goldfinches on the niger seed feeder, and a Redpoll also paid a visit. A female Sparrowhawk was terrorising them all for some time, but haven't seen her for a...

    Hummingbird Hawkmoth

I last saw a Hummingbird Hawkmoth in Lancashire a few weeks ago. They're fantastic little creatures! Back down here in S.Wales, saw an Elephant Hawkmoth caterpillar on some Willowherb in the Sirhowy Valley Country Park. I've never seen the caterpillars before, those'eyes' on the back are fab...

    Hedgehog!!

We have a Hedgehog visiting our garden all the time, and it appreciates cat food imensely. Cats do not mess with hegehogs, they have more sense! Around where I live, it's not cats killing things that you have to worry about, it's the local kids and the pigeon fanciers.

    Swift surprise

Haven't seen a Swift since the beginning of the month, still loads of Swallows though. If you want to see Sand Martins whizzing past your face without a care in the world, the river running through Merthyr Tydfil town centre is perfect. I watch them with delight there every year.

    Strange Moorhen

Thought I would post this picture, it's the strangest Moorhen I've ever seen. It was a pretty tame bird which I saw earlier this year, I was fascinated by it! I'm not sure if this 'condition' has a name or not.....I thought it might be a leucistic bird, but it seems sort of gingery in colour...

    Food and feeders

Does anyone else have experience of Chaffinches using feeders? I hadn't ever seen them use them, they seemed to much prefer picking up what was dropped onto the ground, but lately a male Chaffinch has started using the feeder in my garden. He's very wobbly on the perch and doesn't like to sit on...
