    Crossbilled Cimson-rumped Toucanet

I photographed this Crimson-rumped Toucanet in Ecuador that has a severely crossed bill. It seemed to be eating ok. Perhaps it is not a problem. What would have caused this?

    Small Tree Finch bill colour

Small Tree Finch, female, Galapagos. Why do some of them have an orange bill and some have a black bill? If you look at photos of them on ebird you will see both. (not counting males). Do they change colour during breeding season or as they get older? I also have one that has an...

    Namibia and Botswana Sep 2024

Have three people so far. Looking for a 4th. We will rent a vehicle and travel mostly on our own but with a few guided day trips and a boat trip in Botswana and a side trip to Victoria Falls. 34 days. Expensive but a lot cheaper than a guided safari. Also, a safari tour will be with...

    Storm Petrel

There are many Storm-petrels that are similar. I marked this one as Band-rumped but am not positive. Photo taken in Galapagos.

    Sad in Galapagos

I am currently in Galapagos. Two of the areas that I planned to visit are closed due to avian flu. So I guess I will never get to see the Red-footed Booby or the Waved Albatross. There are a total of three closed areas: Genovesa Island, Punta Pitt on San Cristobal and Espanola Island. One...

    A Sparrow's tail

What happened to this sparrow's tail? It looks like it has been through a wringer and then spread out to three times its normal width. The bird seems otherwise healthy.

Little Brown and white bird on the prairie

Saw this bird out on the North American prairie in northeast Montana. Unfortunately did not get a photo of the front of it. ID appreciated.

    Grouse I think. Saskatchewan

Saw only the head and neck of this bird sticking up above the tall grass. The height of the grass tells me that this is a fairly large bird, larger than a chicken. Some kind of Grouse? Possibly Sage Grouse or Prairie Chicken? Your thoughts, please.

    Oaxaca and Huatulco in October

I will be birding in Oaxaca and Huatulco, Mexico, from 16 to 30 October. Not a multiday tour. Just single or two-day trips with days in between to tour Monte Alban and other places without a guide. Is anyone interested? I have a guide lined up—$ 220 per day for two people.

    Dragonfly that lights up

Has anyone ever seen a dragonfly that lights up like a firefly? Saw one today. It was flashing on and off a very bright orange colour in daylight. It was not a reflection from the sun as it was not moving or changing position.

Best time to go to Barrow Alaska

When is the best time to go to Barrow for birding? Mid-June? Earlier or later? What about Nome? Is Nome worthwhile? Does Nome have the same birds as Barrow? Panning a trip.

    Tropical Pewee (Tumbes Pewee) Peru

Is this a Tropical Pewee (aka Tumbes Pewee)? Seen at higher than 1800 m where Wood Pewees are not supposed to be. Also seems lighter than Wood Pewees and has more white between the eye and bill. What do you think?

    Tityra Peru

It has extensive black on the head, not just around the eyes and forehead; therefore, it is not a Masked Tityra. It does not have an all-black tail; therefore, it is not a Black-tailed Tityra. If it is neither and there are no other choices, could it be a hybrid of the two? Or are the photos...

    Bird photography in the Amazon

I am heading to the Amazon in another week (Peru). I assume it is going to be somewhat dark in the jungle. Especially at this time of year when it is mostly overcast. Looking for tips for bird photography under these conditions, please.

    California or Herring Gull

Looks like a third-year gull or a non-breeding adult, but it is only the beginning of August. The photo was taken at Gull Lake in central Alberta.

    Alder Flycatcher for confirmation

I think this is an Alder Flycatcher. I know they look the same as the Willow Flycatcher, but the Willow is not here in Central Alberta. The Least and the Yellow-bellied have bold eyerings. This one has a faint eyering. What do you think?

Is Birding Pal a Waste of Time?

I paid my fee to join Birding Pal. Then I sent three messages. Two to pals one to a guide. No answers. Is that website a waste of time and money? I tried to contact a guide named J. Church in La Cruecita, Oaxaca, Mexico. Does anyone know of him?
