    Feeders changing bird behavior?

I've not notice any migratorial changes in any of the bird species...hummingbird, bluebird, etc. The resident migrators like blue jays still do what they do, and that is follow the food. Complete migrators still have the same time schedule that thier ancestors have had. But, interesting to me...

    Hummingfird feeder being invaded?

How sweet is that! I've read that many people have reported the Downy on their hummingbird feeders. I get the house finch on mine, along with the squirrel and ants! Welcome to the forum, Easytim

    Just passing through .......

Oh, songbird...I know you are totally serious here, but I have to laugh, only because that is EXACTLY my response, when something fabulous comes for a days visit, and I've yet to see it return...why!? Or how about the wonderful winter visitors, that stay year round, and ALWAYS go to someone...

    Feeders changing bird behavior?

I love this hypothesis! It is my personal observation and reading in this forum on other threads, and at other sites, that this has some merit, for sure. Not only changing some (what we would once call, typical) behavior, but a real adaptation to their environment. Great for species survival...

    BlueJay Nest On Ground

Ya-hooo!! :loveme: Incredible! Sorry to reactivate this post, but I just got home, and after reading Randy saying that number 1 was doing a jiggy dance on the edge, I wasn't all suprised to read that they had fledged!!!! I'm with you BarbaraM---this age was tough to gage, I think the later...

    BlueJay Nest On Ground

LOL! Gads, these guys are making me nervous! I can imagine the wrench in your gut while watching the little acrobat. Perhaps these little guys are a wee bit older than presumed....especially if number one is on the edge already. I am at a loss to help you much further. When robins hop on the...

    Question about baby birds

Way to go Denise! I'm with Katy in saying that the cowbird probably isn't the one that chucked the little guy....the female CB will remove a host egg and lay her own but not remove a chick, as it would serve no purpose for her to lay and egg in an already hatched nest. As KC mentioned, I think...

    PLEASE HELP:: Baby Starvling!

Samantha, I'm so sorry to hear this, it's also very apparent you are upset, too. What you need to do first is stop feeding him anything at all..NO MORE LIQUIDS. IF he survives the night you must call a rehabber immediately first thing in the morning. Cats contain an incredible amount of bad...

    ID Help, Please

I'm going way way out on a limb.......knowing that it can't be right as it would be way off course, White-tailed Hawk...dark juv (maybe 2nd year) Key features listed in Sibley's were the very light tail, whitish breast and four dark "fingers". That's my far out guess, and it's all I got. shelley

    HELP!! What happened?!!

I envy your position Wildwaters! Like I mentioned, I never got to see any of my wrens fledge....too far back in the yard, but a sure recognize the signs, I may get a better shot this year, as they decided to move up in the yard a bit to nest...one in my dummy box (singing his little heart out...

    BlueJay Nest On Ground

I had to look this one up, Randy, as I thought they took longer than robins and bluebirds...and they do. Up to 3 weeks to fledge. My guess, if the eyelids have seperated then your at about a week In another week you don't want to disturb them. Right now they have no sense of fear. By this time...

Going from sketch to finished painting

Holy Moly--get over your hang up (due to this being the computer, inflections are lost, and I in no way am being mean or disrespectful, just amazed). There isn't an artist around that doesn't use life, photos (that THEY have taken or used other photos for definitive detail) along with their...

    Female House Finch???

Wow... LBJ is best that I got. The streaking is barely discernable. Doesn't look like any of the female house finches we have up here, they lean more to the grey side of brown. I haven't any other suggestions that fit though. That's Katy Penland's neck of the woods, perhaps she'll be along in...

Going from sketch to finished painting

Hello Nightheron28, I don't know if this will answer your question or not, but I'll share with you, my technique. You didn't mention in what medium you use, I use watercolor mostly. Nearly all my paintings begin with a drawing, a full complete drawing, not a sketch. I then will use tracing...

    BlueJay Nest On Ground

   It's exciting, isn't it! I treasure the glimpses mother nature allows us to have even under extraordinary circumstances. Still aways to go, but how cool is this! shelley

Check this out. Not for the faint hearted

Man, that is sad. I've seen gender aggression first hand in front of me at a feeder. Both male and female flew straight up making all kinds of noise, then a wrestle move like no other with one pinning the other to the ground, and there they stayed. Freaked me out enough where I ran outside...

    HELP!! What happened?!!

One more added note, alot of times the wrens leave the first nest to start a second one right before fledging time....it's not abandoned, but it does speed up the process and they get down to a second nest elsewhere. They are one of the first migrating birds to leave for the winter grounds. I...

    HELP!! What happened?!!

Hello Wildwaters, House Wrens are noisy fellows, and they are quick when it comes to fledging. Please leave the nest box alone, that is first. How old would you say the chicks are? They usually fedge about 12-15 days. The parents do not go to the nest as often, to entice the little guys out...

    BlueJay Nest On Ground

Out of curiosity LCN, did the parent Blue Jays have a problem with you being around the nest at all when you were constructing the new pole? Hope all continues to go well. shelley

Why do some birds sing at night?

Many songbirds migrate at night, and therefore many also vocalize while doing so. This is now a topic of research to 'count' migrating song birds by song at night. A lonely Mockingbird will sing for a mate long into the night after the robin (which is quite the late talker and very very early...

    blue birds

There are many kinds of bluebirds houses out on the market today, and more being 'improved' to minimize competition with the house sparrow. Way too much information on this subject for this thread, but whatever kinds of bluebird box (follow NABS recommendations, please) they or it should be...

    Little bird ID request please

Well, if I managed this right, I should have a hovering Hummingbird Hawkmoth here. Just thought it might help, if indeed it was a hawkmoth of some kind. shelley Well, I didn't managed it right, so here is the link. http://www.rspb.org.uk/birds/advice/hummingbirdhawkmoth/index.asp I am so...

    Pure Black Oriole

Hi BobMo, welcome to a fellow Minnesotan to the bird forum! I look forward to your next post with a picture. Not to insult you, but do you think you saw a male Orchard Oriole? They are smaller than the Baltimore and Northern Orioles, and can appear solid black until you get the bins on them...
