Cardinal Myzomela - Tanna island, Vanuatu

Beautiful scarlet coloured body, darting about in gardens at White Grass on west side of Tanna. I was visiting Yasur volcano, and feel so privileged to be able to explore this remote island.

    Red-vented Bulbul

Often in and around our garden making noise here in Noumea. Many, many about. In the Melanesian Bird Field Guide it says this bird was introduced in the 1980's, and spreading north. I chose this photo so you can see the red vents and white tail tips.

    Green-backed White-eye

Often a few around the trees and bushes in our garden on Ilot Song, Noumea, New Caledonia. Very busy little birds and quite timid, so difficult to get a pose! Even when there is the tiniest branch they try to hide themselves. Very pretty. Titchy little guys about 10-11 cm long.

    Sacred kingfisher - New Caledonia

I see this fella often around our home in Noumea, watching the water in the bay. Solitary. From my Birds of Melanesia Field Guide, it's the only kind of kingfisher on the island. Beautiful little bird, ever so quiet. And so privileged to live here. This is my first photo posted for 5 years or so!!

    New Caledonia - 2 birds I don't recognise - help please

Hello there, I haven't posted for ages, and am in New Caledonia, and waiting for a bird book just ordered from Amazon to arrive. Many of the birds here are different, and many exotic, not found in other parts. Attached is a bird I saw on a small island offshore yesterday, called Amedee Island...

Unknown duck or similar, north eastern Angola

Hello, Stuck again (!) and I'd once again be very grateful for someone telling me what bird this is - I've been through my books and cannot find it. My fault I'm sure, but I've never seen this one before either after years of birding in the area. Many thanks! (And I know I'll kick myself for...

Now replaced by the 1.4 Mk3, which is significantly better.

    Yellowbill - Ceuthmochares aureus

Seen in north eastern Angola, between Lucapa and DRC border. Next to major river in high tree, by itself. Distant and photo resolution not the highest, plus dismal day! First time seen in area. Taken with 5DMk3 + 300mm +1.4 extender. Mike

Is this a turaco? North eastern Angola

Thanks Mark, very much. I just looked in my books and found it as you say. It looked bigger than the 35cm quoted in Collins, but it was a good distance away. When I get to a better internet connection, will look up in gallery. Mike

Is this a turaco? North eastern Angola

Hello, I haven't posted for ages and have only been able to restart birding in this area after a long absence. Yesterday I saw this bird in the photo attached: it was high in a very large tree, next to a major river. I had just seen 3 x Ross's Turacos a few minutes before. It's about 40-60...

Greenland - gulls and iceberg in southern Greenland

The extremes of ice, dark sea, occasional wildlife, make for stunning vistas in Greenland. I would like to share one of these views taken from the window of an Air Greenland helicopter from Qaquortok to Nanortalik (Nanortalik means place where polar bears pass by). Perhaps this photo is a...

Hi and welcome, birding and wildlife in SA is awesome, spent much time there, and also still spend much time in Angola. Currently in Greenland - slightly colder! Enjoy! Mike

    Birding in Greenland

Thanks Edward for your detailed reply. I agree with all your comments and love the rugged scenery, but as you say neither wildlife nor birdlife is prolific, and only one natural forest remains in the south east: hopefully see that in the summer. I have just returned from Uummannaq, and apart...

    Birding in Greenland

Hi, I've just moved to south Greenland, and can anyone tell me what are the best books / references for birding, plus any other info about wildlife? There are some big eagles here but i don't recognise them, yet. It's just coming out of winter here, -23C today, and not much birdlife, no...

    Schalow's Turaco (Tauraco schalowi)

Steve, Excellent pictures, well done. I believe the blurry ones in the database were mine, apologies. After +10 years in Angola, I've only seen them twice and at huge distance. I look for them every weekend, and sometimes see Ross's Turacos. It's good to know what they look like close to...

Hartlaub duck, Wattled Plover, northern Angola

Dear all, It's a while since I contributed to BF. Yesterday I took this photo of a Hartlaub duck, which I have little info on, and couldn't find in your database. Also is a picture of a Wattled Plover taken three weeks ago, which I also couldn't find. Interesting are the darts on the...
