    Harlan's Hawk

I totally agree with Richard Klim, I do also believe the Harlan's Hawk should be a seperate species. Here in Montana, we get good numbers of them in the winter months, and they are FULLY identifiable from the "normal" Red-tailed Hawks. They even have a slightly different body shape, and...

    Help with scope shopping!

I am shopping for a new scope to upgrade to, and have been surf a few sites. I found an amazing deal on a great Celestron scope at Optics Planet. I know it is not a Kowa, but there isn't a "Celestron" option here. ;) I am looking at the scope, but would like to see what you think of that...

Shopping for new Camera, help wanted.

Thanks for the help! My budget is about 1,700 to 2,000 Dollars (closer to 1,700). My grandpa has a lens that is about 5 years old and he hasn't been using it for half that time. It is a Tamron 28-300mm 1:3.5-6.3 macro. I am not the most camera savvy person, but it sounds like I will need to...

    Your Favorite Bird?

Gray Jay for sure! I love those secretive, but brave, gracefully drab birds. Plus, at the young birders conference in Minot, ND, Louise Zemaitis gave out bird names to everyone, and mine is Gray Jay, with out her knowing it was my fave.

How many rarities are we missing?

I fall just short of the first category in the 1%. I have found a number of odd birds for this area, including several odd gulls. Besides the fact that there aren't enough birders to find the rarities, the biggest factor is that most people wouldn't be able to ID some of the rarities...

How many rarities are we missing?

I totally agree on the fact that if there was more birders, we would find more rarities. I live in the northwestern part of Montana, and there are about 7 really active birders in the area. This is a big area we are talking about. The local hotspots have obviously produced more...

    Fallouts

In eastern Montana, we have had a nice mini-fallout of warblers especially. Even some Prothonotary Warblers showed up. I think it was a 27 or 28 warbler day on Saturday. I live in Western Montana, so I haven't got the whole warbler experience. Does anyone have any good fallout stories, or...
