    hawke frontier ed which mark

Warren I purchased a pair of Hawke Frontier 10x43 ED three years ago, they are outstanding binoculars, if you are comparing them to other makes do it late in the day when the light is poor, I think you will find that the Hawkes outperform any other model of a similar price in poor light, you...

Optolyth 22-60x70 pull scope manual any one?

your scope is a zoom, hence the two rings on the eyepiece, one to select the magnification and the other to focus. You should always use the scope with the drawtube fully extended; close focus would probably be better at lower magnification, hope this helps Nick

    Ridiculously confiding Ruff

I took these photos at the Round Pond, Kensington Gardens, London on August 12th, I've had some problems with my computer so it's taken me this long to post them. This bird showed down to inches and had no fear of people; in 35 years of birding I have never had an encounter with a wader like...

Drab Water Tyrant always makes me chuckle, as for Blue Tits, they are commonly encountered on naturist beaches in southern England during the winter months Nick

What might I see early AM in London Fields?

Google "Hackney Wildlife Group" they will be able to help you and would also be interested in any records you generate; on the raptor front, Sparrowhawk, Kestrel and Peregrine should all be seen during the course of a year with a very good chance of Hobby, Common Buzzard and Red Kite, but you'd...

    Moths of April 2010

I photographed this dark pug at Berrylands Station, Surrey today, I'm guessing it's a Brindled Pug but I would appreciate other opinions (size and shape as Brindled), I've lightened one of the photos in an attempt to show details many thanks Nick

    bird song, Augusta

been watching the golf masters on the telly, they've just shown a nice bit of footage of an Eastern Bluebird, I keep hearing a bird singing that sounds a bit like the spinning coin song of a Wood Warbler (Phylloscopus sibilatrix), anyone else watching who knows what it is? Nick

you won't be inundated with twitchers Chris, your bird was just passing through as they do at this time of year, have a look on the Londonbirders wiki site to see how your sighting fits into the bigger picture http://londonbirders.wikia.com/wiki/London_Bird_Club_Wiki Nick

A choice to make... Frontier EDs, Nikon Monarchs or other options??

I have had a pair of Hawke Frontier 10x43 for almost a year now and I cannot find fault with them, as I do a lot of my birding post work I needed a binocular that performs well in bad light, these Hawkes are superb in that respect, I paid £287 at the London Camera Exchange so they are well...

    Poached gulls' eggs on Masterchef

Presumably when these eggs are harvested the gulls temporarily desert the colony, given that Mediterranean Gulls often nest in BHG colonies what measures are taken to ensure that Med Gull eggs are not taken as well? Nick

    October moths 2009

sp = species ag = aggregate, a combination of two or more closely related species that cannot be specifically identified without dissection are lumped as ag, it's a bit like saying "commic" tern for distantly seen Common or Arctic Terns that cannot be reliably specifically identified Nick

    October moths 2009

hello Martin I've got Larger Moths of the London Area, published in 1989 so a little out of date as I've discovered a few times this year, I was thinking maybe Broxbourne Woods would be a good bet Nick

    October moths 2009

I spent five hours searching for M du J on Wimbledon Common on Saturday without any luck, there are plenty of oaks on the common, many with lichen so my hopes were high; M du J has a somewhat disjointed distribution in the London area, being absent from large tracts of seemingly suitable...
