    Cory's vs Scopoli's, Scilly, 28/08/23.

Vacillating here, primary pattern looks kind of promising, but is the head grey enough, bill small enough? Didn't go through the pics till the return leg on Scillonian, and didn't reckon it made the grade. In better viewing conditions now I'm home, indoors and out of the sun, on phone instead...

    Mull Burnets?

A bit last minute this. Heading over to Mull tomorrow for a few days. Any tips for finding Transparent Burnet? Would also like to find Slender Scotch, but that's probably a long shot, and I'd understand people being reticent providing sites to people they don't know, given what's gone on in the...

    Day-flyers 2023.

Simple enough, decided this year to try and see all the butterfly species available in North East Wales, several of which would be new to me, never really having persued butterflies much. In the process there will hopefully be plenty of day flying moths as by-catch. Did my first proper outing...

Help! I've only gone and started photographing Bees...

.... and I have no idea what species! I imagine I'll get the field guide in due course, but in the meantime, any pointers? And any tried & tested online resources? Thanks on advance. Bee one

To Hayle and back; a half term road trip.

Decided to base this half term's trip around an attempt on the Hayle American Herring Gull, with a side order of Ring-billed. A few days before we were able to go the AHG stopped being reported, but it felt like there was still enough on offer to justify the trip. First port of call was Cot...

    Easy Taiga - Slamannan dunk!

After several years of birding our way round the country we had reached the point that Taiga Bean Goose was the last relatively easily plannable bird Arch still needed, so a few weeks back I decided that, as the schools were going back a bit later than usual this Christmas, I would plan a trip...

    Southwold Caspian Gull? #4&5

Two almost adults. Eyes looked darker through bins, then revealed as pale on pics, but the bills look sort of washed out and fleshy. My least likely candidates, but I thought I'd ask the experts in the hopes of furthering my education!

    Southwold Caspian Gull? #3

A dingier look to the underparts & head than I would usually look for in a Caspian, but with that posture when calling, makes me even less sure. (If that were even possible!)

    Southwold Caspian Gull #2

Different bird from #1. I think!

    Southwold Caspian Gull? #1

All the same bird, taken today, still finding these tough to call with confidence.

    August moths 2022

Best moth yesterday morning, Cloaked Carpet on the kitchen window, buggered off just as I was focusing the camera. Other highlights (all NFY) included Blue-bordered Carpet, Svensson's Copper Underwing, True Lover's Knot, and Dusky & Canary-shouldered Thorns.

    Odd looking Plume, North Wales.

I have a suspicion, but it's a bit of a reach, so I'll hold it back for now, see if anyone wants to have a crack. Unfortunately it gave me the slip when I tried to pot it, so these are my only pics, in situ at the bottom of the trap.

    Fire on Parkgate marsh

Looks like it's centered on Little Neston reedbed from the photos I've seen. Smart money has to be on some numpty with a disposable barbacue.... https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/news/liverpool-news/live-updates-wildfire-rages-parkgate-23444215.amp

    Brent Goose with transmitter?

Going through my pics of Red-breasted Goose at South Farmbridge in Essex today, I see that the Brent just to the right of it has a small black box attached to its neck. Some kind of transmitter perhaps?

Scandinavian Rock vs Water - Inland Sea, Anglesey

Thought Water to start with, then remembered about the pitfalls of Scandinavian Rock and became unsure. I'll do some digging online & hit the books too, but thought I'd pop it on here to see what others think. I'm leaning towards Scandy Rock at the moment. Oh, and there were two of them, looked...

    North Wales Birding

Last year I decided that rather than haring off on trips all over the UK, I would instead focus my efforts more locally and have a go at a North Wales Yearlist. Of course, three months in and the wheels well and truly came off and I ended up limping to a rather pathetic 171, last addition being...

    November Moths

Weather's been godawful of late, so tonight's my first go for a bit, and I've been rewarded with a tick, a Brick! You have to want to get one of these, if only for the name!!

    October Moths - 2021

Trap wasn't exactly hopping with moths this morning, but its contents had a very autumnal feel, with singles of Blair's Shoulder-knot, Rosy & Black Rustics, Lunar Underwing and a NFY Red-line Quaker. Silver Y, Large Yellow Underwing and Common Marbled & Red-green Carpets made up the balance, the...

    Pugs - Slender vs Maple.

A few to post here. Have had a few very small Pugs recently, three back on midish July, then a couple over the past week or so. The July ones I took to be Slender - Small size Rounded wings Greyish colour Prominent discal spot First three from 17th July, fourth from 21st July, possibly a...

    Moth or not?

Had it down as a micro when I photographed it, but since trying to identify it considerable doubts have crept in. Any ideas?

Three small Wainscot type things - Pembrokeshire

These look like three different species to me, but I may be wrong. The first I think may be Small Wainscot, struggling with the other two.
