August moths 2022 (1 Viewer)

JWN Andrewes

Poor Judge of Pasta.
Best moth yesterday morning, Cloaked Carpet on the kitchen window, buggered off just as I was focusing the camera. Other highlights (all NFY) included Blue-bordered Carpet, Svensson's Copper Underwing, True Lover's Knot, and Dusky & Canary-shouldered Thorns.

Despite the warm nights I have had a poor month so far, the highlight being a daytime Hummer on Tuesday.
Trap-wise, the first second-brood SHC this morning and a Coxcomb Prominent, only my 2nd ever, last week are the best of it.

Past three sessions have been pretty poor here too. Best have been my second Black Arches of the year, and the first Single-dotted Wave of the year as well as the first few Square-spot Rustics.

Couple of moths I had to capture, put in jar in refrigerator to get them to calm down enough to picture them.

In west London moths last night included Straw Underwing, Gypsy Moth, Common & Orange Swift, Jersey Tiger, Tree Lichen Beauty, Oak Processionary, Poplar Hawkmoth, Mocha, Rosy Rustic, Light Emerald & 20+ more species.

Temperature has been much cooler the past couple of nights, so not very active. Still picking up lifers though. Up over 500 for my yard, with 300 plus confirmed on iNat.

Not a lifer but definitely my best shot(s), 3 pic stack of what I believe to be Sumac Leaf Blotch Miner Moth

After a run of pretty lacklustre trappings at home it's great to be visiting relatives in Suffolk, whose house backs on to an area of woods, heath's marshes & fields. Plenty of potential for new species. First session last night, lifers being Bordered Beauty, Tawny-barred Angle, Cypress & Lime-speck Pugs, Webb's Wainscot, Tree Lichen Beauty & Treble-bar.

Humming bird hawk moths are having a good year. Here in my Hampshire garden I had four at once on the same buddleia yesterday late afternoon. Just seen one now (11:35) despite a little rain

Over the next couple of nights 4 more ticks (Ear agg, Maple Prominent, Archer's Dart & Maiden's Blush), as well as plenty of stuff I don't get at home, like Straw Underwing, Rosy Footman & White-line Dart. Also a quality bog moth at the gents by the harbour - Red Underwing.

Back home now, and Centre-barred Sallow joins the year list from a session that yielded up 30 Lesser Broad-bordered Yellow Underwings, an impressive count for me.

No trapping since before I went to Finland but two Hummingbird Hawk Moths attending the front garden sea of Valerian, which I dead-headed before going away and returned to find once again a blooming wash of red.

John

Treble-bar NFY yesterday but otherwise very quiet at the moment.
Hardly any Large/Lesser Yellow Underwings, or Dark Arches come to that, this year compared to normal - anyone else found this?

Steve

Had 2 LYU earlier in the week Steve (yes numbers appear to be down), and was treated to just 9 moths this am, which included a celebratory “double mocha”.😊

I would happily settle for one of those - in my experience a Mocha is just a sort of coffee.

Just 11 moths of 9 species here in Aviemore, the highlight was the first Sallow of the year and a rather nice Plain Clay. Only 2 LBBYU which is a drop from last week's 28!

Numbers of LYU and LBBYU are about the same as normal for here, I always get far more LBBYU than LYU with just the odd Lesser Yellow Underwing.

A cooler night last night but a trap running in an Ealing park had just under 30 species this morning.

Most numerous was Water Veneer followed by Horse Chestnut Leafminer.

Signs of recent immigration with Vestal, Diamond-back & 6 Rush Veneer.

Only yellow underwing species was 3 Lesser BBYU.

Always nice seeing moths like Gold Triangle, Setaceous Hebrew Character & Meal Moth.

Nearing 25 lifers in the past week including this Rose Hooktip I just ran across. I almost didn't run back in the house to get the camera. It was quite high up so I couldn't tell what it was. I thought it was just an Oak Besma.

This Small Brocade is a bit south of normal range.

This might be the most colorful Small Mossy Glyph I have seen

Best session of the month last night, Grey Chi was a life tick, Six-striped Rustic a garden tick and Rosy & Flounced Rustics were garden year ticks. Also a Small Square-spot, all my previous have been from the spring flight period, this was my first summer individual. Just a dozen Lesser Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing this time round, nine Setaceous Hebrew Characters was a good count, and my first Hawk-moth, a Poplar, for what seems like ages.
