    Sandpiper/yellowlegs confusion - S Florida

Thank you all. I was suspecting that I was misidentifying the least sandpiper - thinking exactly that it looked smaller than it was because it was in the same patch of mud as the two yellowlegs. I know I've seen least sandpipers before, and they are really tiny - but most of the time I've seen...

    Sandpiper/yellowlegs confusion - S Florida

That would be for #2 - the larger one, I assume. Do you think the smaller ones in 1 and 3 would be solitary sandpipers or least sandpipers - as I said, they looked quite small, but maybe because they were standing right next to the yellowlegs.

    A7iii + 200-600 - a good birding combo?

No - still pretty much the same. Still handheld, and just camera & lens with no bag. Works very well down in my area.

    Sandpiper/yellowlegs confusion - S Florida

So the wetlands were low with the mud exposed, which drew in lots of small shore waders. I'm not as familiar with these, so having a hard time even looking them up trying to distinguish between the various sandpipers and yellowlegs. I think I've got it down to either lesser yellowlegs...

    SE Florida - warbler help

Thank you both. Orange-crowned for #1 - I seem to always overlook that choice because I'm used to them being much more yellow - but immature start out much less colored. Good to hear on the yellow-rumped ID that I was along the right instinct.

    SE Florida - warbler help

We're back in our winter season in Florida with lots of additional birds passing through or staying for the winter months - as usual, some of the warblers still mix me up, with the non-breeding colors and immature/female colors. These two warblers I wasn't sure on and would appreciate IDs: 1...

Warbler or Vireo - South East Florida

I'll have to remember that on vireos' tails. I see 200 warblers for every 1 vireo, so I'm not as familiar with vireos' markings except the obvious ones (as far as I know, I've only really seen black-whiskered, red-eyed, and white-eyed vireos.

Warbler or Vireo - South East Florida

Thank you. I can't say I see that too often on our Y-Rs, but I do recall having an ID trouble a few years ago with one like this. Glad to know I was on track with my gut though. I have been dealing with dozens of warblers, vireos, parulas, redstarts, etc and generally pretty confident with...

Warbler or Vireo - South East Florida

Having trouble with this little guy high up in the trees. My first thought was possibly yellow-rumped warbler, but that strong white eyebrow is throwing me. Almost makes me think of a red-eyed or black-whiskered vireo's strong eyebrow - but there's no black eyeline or lower white stripe under...

South Florida - Royal or Caspian Tern?

Thank you both. I've seen both, but the royals I see a few every year or two, and the Caspians I've only seen twice, with the last sighting in 2012. I'm much more familiar with royals, and this really did seem to be a royal, but I didn't want to get into any arguments correcting other birders...

Warbler mix - Tennessee, pine, palm? - South Florida

Sorry I dropped that last photo from my gallery. And thanks for the congratulations, KC. The end of this year has been surprisingly good for both lifers and rarities. The Tennessee warbler, followed by a yellow warbler and a Wilson's warbler (all lifers)...plus the rarities: ruddy duck and...

South Florida - Royal or Caspian Tern?

Many birders had reported two Caspian terns visiting a local wetlands - it's not a common sight here...when I visited on Saturday, several other photographers were shooting two terns flying over the lake, and identifying them as the Caspians. I joined in to shoot as well - but I expected...

Lots of stuff - possible lifer - Wilson's warbler?; Gadwall & Green-winged teal? - South Florida

Many thanks to both. That's good news - mainly for that Wilson's warbler which is s first sighting for me. Always love to add new lifers to the list, and it gets harder and harder after 18 years of birding down here. And on the ducks, those are only my second gadwalls, and the green winged...

Lots of stuff - possible lifer - Wilson's warbler?; Gadwall & Green-winged teal? - South Florida

OK - I think I may have guessed out some of these IDs, but want to be sure - most of these are species I don't see too often, and most of these are females which are a little harder for me to ID - plus one bird that was ID'd in the field by another photographer would be a lifer for me - but I...

Yellow warbler female, or something else? S.E. Florida

Thank you KC. Always nice to add a lifer.

Yellow warbler female, or something else? S.E. Florida

Thank you Ken. That's the direction I was leaning, but not having seen one in person before, I wasn't 100% confident. Happy to confirm it is - as that's another lifer for me, at least in the U.S. (I spotted one once in Costa Rica 10-12 years ago).

Yellow warbler female, or something else? S.E. Florida

Got this bird today out in the pond apple trees along the levee of a wetland pond - when I first saw the color I thought it was a female painted bunting - but it was way too yellow. The wings weren't right for pine warbler, and bill was too thin for orange crowned - so the only thing I could...

Warbler mix - Tennessee, pine, palm? - South Florida

Many thanks. I'm glad to hear those were indeed Tennessees. I'm not familiar with them having never seen them before - so that's a lifer to add to the list!

Warbler mix - Tennessee, pine, palm? - South Florida

Shooting a bunch of warblers passing through south east Florida this weekend, and having difficulty confirming what some of these are. Some other photographers were reporting a batch of birds we were shooting as Tennessee warblers, but they didn't sound 100% convinced. I thought I recognized a...

    South Florida - warbler ID

Thank you very much. I was definitely leaning towards Cape May, but the females and juvies sometimes throw my confidence off. I definitely got a lucky shot of her - she was hopping through the trees high above me and 6-7 shots were butts, leaves, or blurs - then managed a clean one for this...

    South Florida - warbler ID

Among the migrating birds passing through, we've been heavy with redstarts, black-and-white warblers, some black-throated blues were around...and this bird which I wasn't sure on. My thought was female Cape May, but any confirmation or ID appreciated:

    S.E. Florida migrating warblers/vireos

Thank you - appreciate the input. That third one is tough because the conditions were terrible - he was deep in the trees and far off, so the light was very contrasty and despite daytime, it's at 600mm handheld and ISO 640 from about 80 feet or so. Black-throated green was definitely one...

    S.E. Florida migrating warblers/vireos

Anyone that knows Florida migrating birds who can help with the last ID especially, and confirm the other two, help would be appreciated!

    S.E. Florida migrating warblers/vireos

We're going through waves of migrating birds now, so I'm in that hectic run where I'm photographing lots of different species - most I know, but a few shots I either couldn't quite ID or just want to be sure my ID is correct. All shot yesterday...all help appreciated: 1. I think a northern...
