Watching the entertaining acrobatics of long-tailed tits feeding on budding trees in our front garden. Close up with Leica 10x32uv+

What did you see in your binoculars today?

Amazing place to have on your doorstep. Your post made me wonder if there is a list of all species ever seen in the park? And how many species you have seen? Regard Andy

What did you see in your binoculars today?

Unexpectedly detoured to Finchale Priory where river bends have created 100ft high river cliffs with old woods. Had close views of three of our familiar favourites in bright sunlight, a grey wagtail catching flies under the bridge, a dipper sat on a mossy riverside stone, and then near the top...

What did you see in your binoculars today?

Hawfinch, rare here and usually shy. We waited an hour for him to arrive at the small stand of hornbeam trees then watched him feeding on seeds for about an hour, "resplendent in the winter sun".

What did you see in your binoculars today?

And I had to look up the American yellowhammer, beautiful bird. I guess the cold spell in the UK last week has meant birds are foraging out of their usual comfort zones, as none of the three I mentioned are garden birds

What did you see in your binoculars today?

Sister's house nearby, yellowhammer and great spotted woodpecker in the garden (Steiner 8x44 Discovery), the latter on the nuts and fat-balls, the former underneath. Never seen a yellowhammer venture onto bird feeders, always on the ground picking at the droppings. Our house, three redwing on...

What did you see in your binoculars today?

From our garden mid afternoon, blue sky and occasional cumulous clouds, watching a pair of swifts high up feeding, when 'behind' them far higher, another speck of a bird was caught in my 12x42, circling slowly without effort. The lone bird was so high I could only guess it was a gull soaring...

What did you see in your binoculars today?

About 45 or so starlings (common) mostly young, all pecking at our lawn. Dog scared them off to land on trees at the end of the garden, they all came back, have been pecking for more than an hour. Herring gulls feeding on a neighbour's morning bread offering also caused them to scatter. Must...

What did you see in your binoculars today?

Yesterday Teeside had a beautiful sunrise, and with the early morning sun behind got great views of a short eared owl being mobbed by black headed gulls. It resisted for nearly a minute flying left and right but was eventually chased out of sight. And with help, spotted a pair of...

What did you see in your binoculars today?

In March we moved from N London (end of the M11) to a small town in County Durham near my place of birth. I've not been expecting anything out of the ordinary in the garden although we are now only a stones throw from farmland. This morning a splash of colour caught my eye and I was quite...

What did you see in your binoculars today?

It was a bit of raptors day. A sunny afternoon ride over The Stang, from Barnard Castle in Teesdale to Reeth in Swaledale. In fact we enjoyed the drive to Reeth so much that instead of doing a round via Richmond, we had tea at Reeth and decided to do the return trip back over The Stang. It...

What did you see in your binoculars today?

Magpies are such beaultiful birds. Yesterday one was hopping along the front window sill pecking at things, and all around the front garden. Bold as brass. They also make short work of fat balls in feeders in the back garden. I think they're nesting in the neighbours monstrous mature...

What did you see in your binoculars today?

It's just I'm in the wrong area of the country, though there are half a dozen I could go visit in The Tower ;)

What did you see in your binoculars today?

Rare in the UK, but my 20 year old neice had Lymes. She was bitten on the scalp under her hair and had not been anywhere out of the York/Hull area of England, so she was not diagnosed for quite some time. Eventually my sister asked the GP specifically to test for Lymes! Not a nice thing to...

What did you see in your binoculars today?

A Jay in our London back garden(!) Though only for a short time in the trees and the bird was completely quiet. Normally heard screaching in nearby Epping Forest with a flash of white & blue before vanishing into cover. Great close up views from about 20yds with 12x.

What did you see in your binoculars today?

Loads of red grouse, three red kites hunting, two soaring buzzards and a sparrowhawk in a fir tree. Buckshott Fell/Bale Hill/Meadows Edge. Oh, and a meadow pipit with another red grouse just standing 15ft from the roadside, watching us watching them watching us. Bins, Leica 12x50 UV+

What did you see in your binoculars today?

Nice surprise mid-afternoon on my local patch, a kingfisher flew into view as I was watching a shoveller swim round in circles. In 18 years I can't recall seeing a kingfisher on Highams Park lake, then spot two busily fishing in one afternoon, close up views too. Watched a pair of mandarin...

What did you see in your binoculars today?

RSPB Rainham today. Adult and juvenile hobby hunting with great style for 2-3 hours over the water as we walked around, a real treat to watch them chase and swoop after dragonflies. Also of note: whinchat, peregrine, barn owl, little egret, buzzard, kestrel, cormorant, pintail, wigeon; and a...

What did you see in your binoculars today?

A bit of Africa/Asia unexpectedly on my bird feeder today for some breakfast excitement. A Rose-ringed parakeet, which till now have been seen only in local high trees or flying over, was sitting eating peanuts 10' from the house. Lovely close views through the ever-handy 10x44, they are...

What did you see in your binoculars today?

Took your advice when visiting Walthamstow Wetlands today, driving to park as suggested in Coppermill Lane. Walked up to the Centre and half way up towards Lockwood, round and back. Looking for a Hobby but no raptors; however I love the way young birds are less skittish. Extremely close up...

What did you see in your binoculars today?

There are sparrowhawks to be seen around Waltham Abbey too, where the River Lee, canal and lakes near to Fishers Green are. I've seen buzzards quite a few times soaring over Highams Park area. Also there is a lovely family of Little Grebe on the Highams Park lake which show well early in the...

What did you see in your binoculars today?

Forty martins, I feel like summer is almost here, but what were they? Managed to count at least forty, but too distant to tell whether sand or house, though no swallows or swifts mixed in. Couldn't even see them with the naked eye and was looking at herring gulls when I noticed them far...
