    I have seen Black Rail as well. I'm not sure I would even consider that an uber hard bird in North America/The ABA to get, nevertheless the world.

    I would imagine the only real maximum is the number of birds recognized. If you were a billionaire with lots of political connections and free time, probably any bird could be possible.

    I think those should be judged on a case by case basis. Some possibly extinct birds just haven't had a serious search performed for them. Others are probably legitimately extinct.

    bkrownd has Hawaiian Crow, so you can check that one off. I would imagine that there are some widespread rails and owls with decent population sizes that might fall under the "easiest to see but not seen category"

    Saw a male last year in Nome Alaska in Summer...my first eider (yes I saw a Spectacled before I saw a Common :P)

    Some tough birds from Japan Japanese Night Heron Bonin Honeyeater Styan's Grasshopper Warbler. I don't think their are reliable sites for the Night Heron, and it's mostly seen through shear luck (although encountered perhaps a little more regularly at migrant traps). Bonin Honeyeater is just...

    I have Kirtland's Warbler...it's actually very easy to see if you make the trip to Northern Michigan How about Nihoa Millerbird, Nihoa Finch, and Coco's Island Finch? All are endemic to small islands which I don't believe allow access except to researchers?
