Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

Thanks for checking it out again Nick et al, I've not been able to get up there today. I'm resigned to it being just a Chiff.

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

For a Chiff it has very pale bare parts (wholly orange lower mandible, legs are pale particularly on the underside of the tarsi), looks quite long-winged, overall plumage tone dull green on the upperparts, with a dirty yellow wash restricted to chin/throat. In all probability it will turn out to...

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

Indeed - I remember finding 3 near my high school (it was something like 1991) when, as you say, Waxwings inland were much more irregular than these days. Needless to say, being a fairly clueless schoolboy birder at the time, they blew my mind!!! It does seem like such a big change; makes me...

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

As we now know, the Belvide bird is the Pool Hall individual, so I think it's likely that the Tox bird is actually the Blithers bird relocating (having turned up the day after the Blithers bird disappeared).

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

More Black Redstarts! A pair of adult birds reported at the bottom of Loomer Road, Chesterton today - anybody know more specific location details?

Yes, sorry that's who I meant.

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

Ooops! You are now officially the new Manty ;) That's Short-toed Lark and now Grotfinch turning up whilst you go away!

Silverdale Country Park A Jack Snipe flushed fron the Void today (+ 16 Golden Plover over)

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

Yep, well done Steve - forget birding regularly at Gailey, or anywhere else for that matter, for a long while ;)

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

Yep, still there at 09:30. I had brief flight views as it was flushed by a dog walker :C fortunately the egret went back down on the edge of the main lake. Another nice patch tick pour moi :t:

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

Patch mega :t: although barely scarce these days ;) Despite recently becoming a country park and suffering from the accompanying increase in disturbance, the Void area is actually having a pretty good last 6/7 months when you think about it...Red-backed Shrike, Black Redstart, White-fronted...

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

Excellent find indeed! Over the past 12 years or so, that particular fence line has had nothing better than a sodding Stonechat, and now it gets this and a Black Redstart in the same Spring, grrrrrr. Sigh.

I think Cambs has had one too.

Excellent record :t: Like hen's teeth around North Staffs these days...

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

Ha ha. Although for 'off form' read 'nobody checking it'! Having a 12 week old baby means my birding opportunites are limited, as you can well appreciate ;)hence only 2 or 3 Hales visits for me since the Tundra Bean...

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

You've got some catching up to do, I think the mighty Hales is still rubbing your nose in it for Staffs Cat A's so far this Spring ;)
  17. S

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

Nope; I had the only previous record on a WeBS count a couple of years ago! After nearly 600 visits to Utch, Rockbirder still needs Little Gull :eek!:

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

Uttoxeter Quarry Little Gull 1 adult summer this afternoon, plus another group of 5 briefly before heading off in the direction of the River Dove.

Awesome stuff - wish I'd been able to get up there y'day. The forecast for the coming week looks like more north-easterlies with cloud/showers, so the migrants should keep flowing. My next bet for the mighty hill is Bluethroat around the reedbed area ;) Keep up the good work :t:

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

I had an optimistic check of it (and a highly optimistic check of Bateswood Lake too!) the other day, alas no luck at either site.

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

Nice one Russell - I've only just found out by logging on this evening!! I drove past Berryhill this morning on my way to Burton at about 08:15...still would have been too late. Ah well. Good day for the mighty hill :t:

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

Marsh Sandpiper at Hales hopefully :-O

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

Looks like a four-way tussle this spring then, between Radford, Gailey, Utch and Hales...which is best? There's only one way to find out...FIGHT!! I haven't been to Hales for a week; god knows what's lurking there.
  24. S

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

Nah, looks like Radford Meadows SWT is the new Gailey! As for me being seen at Utch, it all depends on you pulling your finger out and finding me something good there ;) I'll no doubt carry on doing my WeBS counts there for a bit yet :t:

Folk are just waiting for me to go back out there again and find something else ;)
