Which Grouse? Algonquin Park, Ontario (1 Viewer)

Gillian_M

Birding since 2006!
I spent the weekend at Algonquin and took lots of photos of birds which I need help identifying!

I'm hoping this is a Spruce Grouse but I suspect it's a Ruffed Grouse. I didn't get a good look at them (there were two) and the only photos I got were blurry/from a distance and the birds were moving quickly. Also the day was rainy and overcast.

Can someone please confirm this bird's ID?

Many thanks!

You're right - it's a Ruffed Grouse. Note the small crest and the black "ruff" on the neck. Ruffed is much more common in Algonquin than Spruce - you'd have to have a really lucky day to find one of those guys.
