Bird of prey, Mauritania (1 Viewer)

Picturewise not much to do on, I'm afraid.

This bird was being mobbed relentlessly by two kestrels in a woodland near fresh water in the very far south of Mauritania by the Senegal river.

I got the jizz of a snake eagle though I only know short toed snake eagle well. I am new to African snake eagles.

This bird had slate grey upper parts with a black tail and, unless I have false recall, a white band in the tail. It also had some scattered white on the wings I think (see one picture)

For information, Beaudouin's snake eagle is on the country list but western white banded is not though the distribution maps show it very close (but in Senegal) to where I saw this bird.

Of course I may have got the jizz wrong and it is something else. Anyone out there who can tell what this is from this two attached pictures.

All help gratefully received.

Rob

Thanks to all. I am very comfortable with your identification.

Until today I have had no dealings with this species. You live and learn.
