I am wondering if the grouse is Dusky Grouse. I agree with Western Tanager.

I was going mostly on range, though it seems Lake Chelan is an area where both might be possible (though Ebird has more records of Sooty from that area, with Dusky becoming commoner further east). From what can be seen in the photo, the air sacs look yellowish rather than reddish, which should also be better for Sooty.

I looked in eBird too; I didn't realize there was such overlap between Dusky and Sooty Grouse. The air sac looks a little reddish to me. I've never seen either species so I am far from positive about my proffered identification.

Interoception (great nym by the way), do you have any more pictures of the grouse?

I do have another picture of the grouse. it's pretty similar to the one I posted but I will upload it tomorrow in case it's any help. (It is on my work computer)

Here is the other picture.

Not much better -- quite underexposed so I have brightened the picture

Thanks! I agree, it's not much better. I was trying to count the tails feathers, as Dusky Grouse has 20 and Sooty Grouse has 18, but neither picture really lends itself to that.
