Is Canon 1d mk iv compatible with Speedlite 580EX? (1 Viewer)

I have a Speedlite 580EX (mark i) that works fine with my Canon 1d mark iii. However, I can't seem to pair it at all with my 1d mark iv. e.g.
- When I use the camera's Menu function to try to control the Speedlite from the camera, it says 'please connect a suitable Speedlite' or similar.
- can't get ETTL to work

Is the 1d mark iv not retro-compatible with the mark i speedlite? do i need to buy a mark ii speedlite?

Thanks in advance

James

Hi, I've checked my 1D IV manual, and it looks as though there are some subtleties with regard to 580 I or II. See page 121 in the manual. My 550EX seem to work OK, but I'm not expecting my camera to show the Speedlite's menus.
