    At the Colosseum (Rose-ringed parakeet)

I leave my home in my parakeet paradise in Brazil to go to Europe and this is what I see high up at the Colosseum walls. After I got back to the hotel I googled it so now I know, but when I took the picture I had no idea parakeets had invaded Italy, so you can imagine my face when I saw these...

Great Spotted Woodpecker & Ring-Necked Parakeet

While watching this woodpecker on the feeder, this parakeet would, every now and then, jump of its branch and try and force the woodpecker off, after a bit of luck I managed this shot during the attack! (It still didn't move the woodpecker though!)

  8. Rose-ringed Parakeet

    Rose-ringed Parakeet

Not wholly welcome, in that they take food intended for Goldfinches and other small birds. But they're photogenic, both species are doing well here, and in any case, according to the Natural History Museum (London): “Tawny owls, sparrowhawks and peregrine falcons will all feast on parakeets...

kept on hearing them near my place but don't see them on the moringa tree as usual. i know they are so close because there calls are so loud, sometimes i see a couple flaying by, but too quick for me to point the camera. was glad to see this one early in the morning and it did not mind me...

    Rose-ringed Parakeet (female)

If this looks familiar, I already posted a shot of it with the wings flat. It will be the last shot of this individual I'll post :) I don't know if the bright colour makes this species more obvious to Peregrines, but their loud calls do announce their presence. The falcon does take these birds...

    Rose-ringed Parakeet

Female bird. I wondered if it was carrying the snipped-off stem as material for lining a nest hole. Google gave no clear answer, but while searching I found a paper in the academic journal Current Zoology, which is worth quoting: "The rose-ringed parakeet Psittacula krameri is one of the most...

    Rose-ringed Parakeet

Thanks very much for the comments on the flight shot of this bird. I've no idea what the orange berries are, but the parakeet seems to like them, or at least think them worth checking out. Thank you for your comments, stay safe and well. John

    Rose-ringed Parakeet

I still don't quite know what I think about these preposterous parrots, but they're thriving, colourful, and here to stay. Thank you for your comments, stay safe and well. John

four of them were on this moringa tree, same tree where i got the sunbird shot, kept on approaching them tippy toe until i was able to get this shot which almost full frame, then two stupide crows came and made them leave so fast, could not even get a flight shot. hope you like it.

    Rose-ringed Parakeet

Heard this male squawking 20 feet from my closed window, and it stayed put while I opened the window and fired off noisy bursts of shots. Not a "secretive" species. Thanks for your comments, stay safe and well. John
  22. New Neighbor

    New Neighbor

These have become common urban birds all over Europe, and each city has its own story about how they came to be there - somebody's escaped pets, a zoo that went broke, a break-in at a pet shop that released some ... These are probably mostly urban myths. My guess is that they were popular pets...

Apparently, in parts of London Peregrines now take more Parakeets than Feral Pigeons (which may be welcome news for those who don't like their loud squawks and tendency to monopolise feeders. I'm staying neutral). Thank you for your comments, stay safe and well, and good birding! John
