Hi !
I have some doubt about the id of two young gull, what do you think about them?

Gull I : the dark one on the bottom on pict 1, 2, 3 et 4
I’m not sure but I think it’s the same bird on the right or on the bottom of the other picts
The inner primaries can’t be seen…
Lesser black backed or quite dark herring gull?

Gull II : The bigger one on the left from the pict 5, under the ad great black backed gull
I initially thought it was a great black backed too, but on pict 7 it appears to be a closer to a herring (beak too weak). I I had a doubt that this could be an angle effect (picture taken from above the gulls on a jetty) what do you think?

Thank you in advance

hi maelle,

gull 1 looks like a LBBG to me but it's indeed not that easy. in western europe juv gulls with such tertials usually are graellsii types. the cold dark brown tone, the all dark head, weak bill and black primaries add to this image.

gull 2 is a juv GBBG allright - in pic 9 it shows the right head structure of GBBG while in pic 7, like you say it looks astonishing herring gull like.
