2011 Christmas Bird Count Thread (1 Viewer)

My group surveying the area around Lake Contrary, Saint Joseph, Missouri (our portion of the count circle) observed this MERLIN. (* It was one of 2 for the entire CBC circle.)

I did only one, on Dec. 17. That was the Kitchener count, which that I have been doing every year since 1995 or so; normally, I also do a count in neighbouring Cambridge, but was not able to participate this year due to vacation.

Despite the very mild winter we've been having here, our section of the count circle did not get any really surprising birds - our best one was probably the White-throated Sparrow. Not that these are particularly rare around here in winter, but this one was singing! That was new for me, for a CBC.

Others in the circle had Chipping and Field Sparrow, and those are unusual at this latitude.
