Can we promote groundhog habitat on a small suburban lot? Will the groundhogs come back? (1 Viewer)

Hello, folks!

Since it's Groundhog Day today (at least here in the US), I was wondering if anyone might have advice about something that regards them.

When we first moved here, there was a groundhog hibernating in a burrow a close distance to our house.
The first year that we lived here, she actually mated and brought up a lovely litter of groundhogs, which dispersed in the fall.

We noticed that last year, she was nowhere to be seen. We think that she moved on, which we are sad about, but it figured that she eventually decided that the burrow was too close to human disturbance to continue using it to raise her young.

I was wondering, though. Would there be any way to invite the groundhogs back to our yard? Perhaps if we planted their favorite foods, or dense cover around their burrow?

Unfortunately, our yard isn't very large. There wouldn't be many places where the groundhogs could avoid all contact with people or pets (or at least the scent of them).

How tolerant are groundhogs of human disturbances, anyway? We almost never saw them when we lived in Connecticut.
Might they return someday if they learn to coexist with us?

Any input would be much appreciated. Thanks! God bless!
