Celestron Outland X 8x42? (1 Viewer)

I am a birder from India, and was a happy owner of olympus DPS I 10x50, for
past seven years.
Lost that bin, and now looking for a decent budget roof binocular, which would give atleast equal
performance of my old Olympus bins.

Considering Celestron outland x 8x42, which suits my budget well.
Would be helpful if anybody could comment on its optical performance and is it any good for birding?

Thanks in advance.

Happy birding..

I can't help you with the Celestron 8 x 42 Outland as I have never used it. I'm sure you will get some comments here on it. I'm not sure if it has been discontinued or not.

If you are also interested in looking at another very good and reliable 8 x 42 you should also consider the new Zeiss 8 x 42 Terra ED, if it is in your price range. It was introduced in June this year. It costs $350.00 US funds.

Here is a link giving information on it. It also has 5 excellent reviews which you can read.

I have had one since it came out and I recommend it highly.

Here is a review of it just posted on Bird Forum this morning:

Thanks for the reply. But my budget it well over less than 100 USD.

Would be helpful if anyody could give comparison of optics
between Celestron outland x 8x 42 VS Celestron nature 8x42 porro.

Obviously porro may have better optics, but is the differnce really huge?

It is an very new binocular and it may be hard getting reviews for it. It just came out.

In your price range most people here will advise you to stay with a Porro Prism binocular. It is not very likely that you will find a comparable roof prism in that price range which can compete with a Porro Prism. It's a matter of Quality Control for the most part. Roof Prisms are more complex to make and therefore more costly from price and quality standpoints.

Nikon makes excellent porro prisms in your price range in their ACULON series.

Here is their 8 x 42:

I've used the Outland, and although I haven't used a DPS, I have used other Olympus porros including their excellent EXPS. I thought the Outland was a rather poor performer, and this is including consideration of it's low price. Based on my experience with the Oly binos, I would go with the DPS1. Or to put it another way -- I doubt that the Outland will make you happy like the Oly did.

That being said, I should also mention that Celestron has a newer version called the "Outland-X". I would hope that the X is better than the original Outland, but I can't say for sure. I would however bet that the Oly is still better than the X.

You might also see what the Olympus EXPS-1 costs. In the States at least, it can be found under $100, and is an excellent performer......
