County Galway Birding (local patch) (3 Viewers)

Adult American Herring Gull at the docks this morning I assume its the returning bird which is now I think 5 years?

Dermot thats one hell of a report great stuff.

Please can you provide any info. on how regular this bird is. I was planning a trip across for it. Is it a daily tick? How best can it be tracked down? How long does it usually stay until?

Thanks in anticipation.

Steve
I tracked back through the dates for the American Herring Gull. I guess there are no guaranties with the adult you would have had better luck with the 1st winter at the being of the year.

It's not in Galway but anyway,
Yesterday at the Rine, Ballyvaughan 8 Snow Buntings on the spit, 40 Brent and about 10 GN Divers offshore. About 25 Grey Plover.
The Green-winged Teal is still at Bell Harbour too although just about everybody in Clare and Galway must have seen that bird by now.

Today on the Curraghline, a female type Marsh harrier, 1 ringtail and 32 Greenland white fronts.

At Black Rock today, 4 GN Divers, 1 Common Scoter (female, must be the same bird that was seen there a few weeks ago) 2 Sandwich terns, 1 Razorbill and lots of Black Guillemots.

Male Merlin, Connemara, yesterday.

Niall re. Inishmore I/we have no plans to set up an obs out there. Will try to rent out a house though for next Autumn out there which would be far easier than moving from hostel to hostel because they have double booked for the umpteenth time. There are a few more species for the Inishmore list which I'll add later.

There seem to be plenty of fish out off Claddagh at the moment - more auks out there today than I've seen in a while, guillemots outnumbering razorbills, plus ten each of great northern & red-throated diver and good numbers of shags and cormorants. Also plenty of common seals and three porpoises too.

On Sunday I saw 13 scaup on Lough Atalia and chiffchaff at Rahasane.

Cheers Tom - looks a bit hit and miss. I think I'll wait for a more reliable individual.

yesterday evening at Dangan, 1 Woodcock. It flew by the dressing rooms just after dark silhouetted by the floodlights. First time I've seen one down there.

Had the Forster's Tern at Rusheen Bay today - about 2.30pm it settled in the bay briefly, when the rising tide had covered all but a few strips of mud, then again at 3.30 heading east just offshore. I think this is the first sighting since 22 Nov, and perhaps the first record from Rusheen??
Good numbers of waders were on the mud before the tide came in, including 535 dunlin, 72 knot (a personal site record), 12 grey plovers, 152 ringed plovers, 118 bar-wits and 18 greenshanks. Also 4 little egrets, 38 brents and 13 gndivers (including one in the bay again).

Just got back details on a colour-ringed bar-tailed godwit I saw at Claddagh on 27 Nov. It was ringed in the Dutch Waddensea in April this year, and was present there again from late August to mid September.

BrosnaTom - hope nobody saw you hanging around near the dressing rooms just after dark with your binoculars! :eek!:
Nice one on the snow bunts.

Steve,

Dont be too put off by the birds apparent hit and miss status.
Coverage in ireland is not great..even at major sites like nimmos.
This bird would not have been looked for every day, and when tides etc are factored in, it may not have been "gettable" everyday before or after someones work time.

Its worth a try.

Regards

Owen

Hi all,
Just wanted to say thanks for keeping the news flowing on this thread.
I'm gonna be in Galway from 17 - 20 Jan and hope to catch up with the Am Herring Gull, Forsters Tern and any other goodies that happen to be about - so it's all very useful
info for me!

Cheers
Chris

American Herring Gull was at Galway Docks this morning 9am. 5 Sandwich Terns on Claddagh Beach no sign of the Forster's Tern. 300+ Dunlin also with a few Bar-tailed Godwit and one Great Northern Diver. Ring-billed Gull was on the slipway at Nimmo's.

Plenty of ducks a Anglingham but they were all at a distance which seems to be a safe zone to avoid the shooting. Looking out across the Corrib there is plenty of snow on the Twelve Pins very seasonal.

The other additions to the Inishmore List

160 Night Heron
161 Puffin
162 Cuckoo
163 Mistle Thrush
164 Stock Dove
165 Corncrake
166 Waxwing

No sign of the American Herring gull on Sunday.
At Lough Atalia 69 Shelduck, 20 Scaup, 35 Wigeon,15 Teal, 3 Gadwall, including Lapwing a single Greenshank and the usual gulls and Redshank.

At Nimmo's today a single 1st winter Iceland Gull.

News Today
This morning at Nimmo's the Ring-billed Gull was in the playing fields also 31 Brent Geese. Ringed Plover, Dunlin, Bar-tailed Godwit, Curlew and Redshank also present.
At the slipway there was a 2nd winter Iceland Gull. No sign of the American Herring Gull at the docks, there were plenty of gulls gorging themselves on fish offal. It was a miserable wet morning so headed for the comforts of home. Got a text from Dermot that the 3rd winter Kumlien's Gull was still at Clifden Quay for the third day http://www.irishbirding.com/birds/web?task=Display&sighting_id=7318.
Tim rang to say he had seen the 2nd winter Iceland Gull and a 1st winter Iceland Gull at Nimmo's. He seen a Scoter at the causeway but could not be sure if it was a Surf or not conditions were dreadful. Dermot later in the day confirmed it was a Surf Scoter. Dermot also had another 2nd winter Iceland Gull and 2nd winter Kumlien's Gull at Nimmo's, hopefully he has a few photos.
Dermot also had 2 Crossbill, 1 Glaucous Gull 3 Iceland Gull all at Rossaveel.

2nd winter Kumlien's

Hi all

I've been talking to a number of people about the 2nd winter Kumlien's I had at Nimmo's on Saturday which is the very same individual shown in Tom's pics above. Since the markings on the primaries are so light it is probably better if this bird is left as an Iceland.
Ad Med Gull again in Mannin Bay today.

All the best

Dermot

Hi all

A few recent bits & bobs...

Had a buzzard last week fly over my car along the main Dunmore road, NE of Tuam before landing in a nearby field.

Yesterday morning had the surf scoter just off Silver Strand beach. Irishbirding.com lists one at Claddagh yesterday, so may be two birds around, though last Saturday's report from there I think was actually at Silver Strand?

Also off Silver Strand, Iceland and glaucous gull following fishing boats offshore, plus 1st-w Med gull on the mudflats in the bay. Good numbers of waders there too - c.600 dunlin etc.
