County Galway Birding (local patch) (1 Viewer)

It's a bit of an American duck fest in North Tipp at the moment.
Pat found 2 Green-winged Teal and a Ring-necked Duck on Ashton's Callow this morning

Hi all,

Just to quick word to say that I saw the American Herring Gull on Sunday 1st March in the area described above, opposite Nimmo's Pier. It appeared twice, very briefly, between 12:00 and 12:40 before flying off over the docks. This was about an hour before low tide. This seems like a good time to scan the rocks along the edge of the long walk. Up to 8 UK birders had been around but no other birders present during this period! Thanks to Tom and Tim for the advice... I will post my sightings and some photos from the past few days spent in Galway and Mayo when I get the chance.

Cheers,

Neal

Few pics over the last few days. One surprise was the fox sleeping on Claddagh Beach near the Causeway on Thursday.

Pied Wagtail trying to tell me something.
Great Northern Diver at Salthill.

American Herring Gull dropped in this morning during Tim's outing on Nimmo's Pier.

Also a 2nd winter Kumlien's Gull which I had down as an Iceland, thanks to Dermot for pointing out the finer details.

Gyrfalcon seen today by Niall Hatch and the South Dublin Birdwatch group on a visit to Galway. They were getting of their bus about 200 meters from Nimmo's Pier when they seen the bird. I was waiting for them at the slipway. They arrived telling me they just seen a Gyrfalcon flying with prey across the playing fields at Nimmo's:eek!::eek!::C:C I was scanning the gulls. Such is life.

Birdforum are doing a bit of spring cleaning and have move a few treads around. All the Irish treads including this one are under one location so might be an idea to book mark this link.

Some photos from Nimmo's Pier and Baltimore (Co. Cork).
The American Herring Gull seems to be showing up more regularly in the last week at the slipway.

American Wigeon

While doing I-WeBS this am (Mar 10) Deirdre Comerford and I had a female American Wigeon at Inchiquin (L. Corrib) near Headford. Had good close views in perfect light and other conditions. Is this an 'additional' species to the list?

County List 2009

140 American Wigeon

Nice find Neil, might try and get out to Inchiquin tomorrow. Yank Wigeon came in at 132 last year found by John Murphy at Rasahane 23rd March. Bittern was 140 last year on 5th April.
