Identification please

We were along the north bank of the Tyne today, from the Quayside upriver to the Staithes. Feeding in the mud were these two. What are they - any ideas please? The distinct flash on the side of, presumably, the male, should perhaps help?
We had a super time on our hired mobility scooters, from the Baltic through Gateshead Mobility, .............. more pics to come!

Teal on the Tyne!

Thanks for your swift response, Andrew! Although I searched in two good bird guides, I didn't feel confident in any decision as to what they were. You have eased our minds on this one.
Is it at all surprising to see them on the river at this time of year, or at any time? Have to confess, I'm not very good on ducks :)!!

Called at Hartlepool to try for the firecrest.
Not the best of weather, but the bird showed and even managed a couple of record shots :t: , in fact, there were two firecrests while we were there.
Other birds of note were lesser white throat and chiffchaff.

After waiting around for a couple of hours, hopeing for better views/photo's, decided to go to Saltholme and spent the rest of the day at the bottom tank.
Much the same birds as the other day, but no sign of the jack snipe while we were there.

I'll not bother since you two got the rest 8-P

Well maybe the Chiffchaff & Firecrest from the Croft at Hartlepool. Two Firecrest when we were there this afternoon as well.

Also Yellow-browed Warbler seen at Seaton Carew in Trinity Churchyard. Proved too elusive for photos though.

Dunlin x26 on the Bottom Tank at RSPB Saltholme along with several Black-tailed Godwit, Snipe, Gadwall, Shoveler, Teal, Wigeon, Little Egret, Little Grebe & Redshank.

Nice pics Ian et al.
Im no expert when it comes to plumages etc, but isnt that a Willow Warbler in your pic Ian ? (primary projection compared with tertial length)

Not sure if it's just the angle. I can see what you mean though as usually the wings look a little stubby in Chiffchaff - though they can look longer when the wings are drooping according to Collins. Very black legs on it. The half crescent below the eye is white also for Chiffchaff. I'll post it in the ID forum and see what comes up.

EDIT: Well spotted Steve - Looks like Wilow Warbler it is :t:

Seaton Snook - pm - Grey Plover x45, Bar-tailed Godwit x17, Knot x5, Dunlin x9. Turnstone x4, Redshank x2, Sanderling x5, Oystercatcher x15.

Seaton Channel - Great Crested Grebe x5, Red-breasted Merganser 15+, Teal, Wigeon, Cormorant, Shag, Curlew.

Migrant bushes - just Wren, Robin, Blackbird & Dunnock.

Hooded Merganser

Does anyone know if it has moved off from Hemlington Lake?

No news since Monday - just wondered if it was negative or just no-one works the lake regularly.

Nothing on the Yorkshire thread.

Thanks.

I am suprised it has not been reported if it is still present.:news:
Sometimes it just might not get reported.

Anyone try for or catch the Red-Flanked bluetail today at Whitburn? - I was going to but would have meant a manic dash before work :-(
