Hi all.
During the Easter holidays, I will be in Greece with my family for two weeks, from approximately the 4th April. We will be staying in the region of Kalamata, in the Peloponnese, in the south of the country. If anyone has any information as to birding around this area it would be much appreciated.
Many thanks
Joe

Try the Travelling Naturalist Bird holiday website they have info on where you are going. They have bird tour reports.

Have a good holiday

I've been to that part of the Peloponnese a couple of times, the most recent time being 2002. It's probably not the best part of Greece for birds (although I haven't been there at migration time), but I do remember visiting the old fortified villages along the Mani peninsula to the south of Kalamata. Rock Nuthatches and Blue Rock Thrushes were very common in these villages, with the nuthatches often singing from tv aerials on the rooftops. The roads there are terrible though (narrow and winding) so it can take a long time to travel what seems a short distance on the map. If you do visit the Mani, an interesting non-birding excursion is the boat trip in the Pirgos Dirou caves, if they are open at that time of year.

Thanks for the information. Unfortunately I cant open the links Col, but the Travelling Naturalist website was useful.

Hello Joe.

Giallova is your best bet I reckon as almost all of Peloponisos was burnt to the grount during last years fires... Check any remaining patches of greenery in burnt areas as they are bound to be overcroweded with migrants...

Enjoy your stay and good luck with your birds!

Dimitris
