Hi All,
We had this bird visit us for the first time yesterday. A bit bigger than a robin, black with a white stripe on the wing. I am in Southern Ontario. TIA

Hello Toolbox,

Could it be a red-winged blackbird. That white streak on the wing may be accompanied by a red patch. See this entry for help.

Happy bird watching,
Arthur
Thanks Arthur,

We ruled out the red-winged blackbird, it was larger and it didn't have any red on the wings at all. It looked more like a tri-colored blackbird, without the red, but those birds aren't in our area.

Hi Tool Box and a warm welcome to you from all the Staff and Moderators. I'll move your post to the ID forum where there are more people looking with the ability to help you.

I'm sure you will enjoy it here and I look forward to hearing your news.

Agreed, it's a red-winged blackbird. A few of them overwinter in southernmost Ontario, but my guess is that you're seeing a migrant. I've been seeing a bunch of them in the past few weeks (in places where I saw zero all winter). The males like to head north a few weeks ahead of the females, to start claiming territory.

Hello Toolbox,

Red-winged blackbirds are now common in New York City as they arrived here weeks, ago. So southern Ontario should be seeing the migrants. The males always turn up first. Red-wingred blackbirds are partial to wetlands.

Happy bird watching,
Arthur
