Himalayan Long-tailed Shrike - Chiang Rai yesterday (2 Viewers)

Happy New Year all Members and Bird Watchers!

Sitting in a boat looking for birds on Kok River in Chiang Rai

I had this bird sitting in the reeds, refusing to show the full head and I took many pictures, trying to whistle at the bird. I tried everything and this is the picture with the bird showing most face.

I get this to be the Himalayan Long-tailed Shrike as this is the only shrike with black head in my book. But of course, the sunlight can play a role in making a grey top looking dark.

Any thoughts about my ID?

Yes, a Long-tailed Shrike. Should be subspecies tricolor I think (longicaudatus is similar but I think is out of range here).

I reported it as a Long-tailed Shrike (tricolor/longicaudatus) as the Himalayan Long-tailed Shrike have two pictures in my book. Looking the same but a little difference in colour. One is marked tricolor and the other is marked longicaudatus

Yes, I spotted two of them. Unlucky both times as the head was covered by the grass/ reeds. I tried all my tricks to get the birds to look at me, but there was no interest from the bird to see where they whistling came from.
