After an unproductive morning, I got a fly-over year tick as I was heading to my last birding stop of the day.

576. Peregrine Falcon

I had a three-falcon day today, something that has never happened to me in all my years, at least in North America.

I started with an American Kestrel this morning in my yard, then the Peregrine Falcon, and finally a Merlin at my last birding stop.

Wednesday through Friday of this week brought four would-be county lifers to my local state park. Saturday and today brought me missing all of them...

But I still managed to hear one new bird this evening:

259. Eastern Screech-Owl

I'm sure I could have got this sooner, I just never really put any effort into it before today.

2,000 up this morning with Auckland Islands Shag.

A few pics here...

All the best

Went out this evening to nearby open fields and picked up a year tick just at dusk.

577. Short-eared Owl

I went out almost every weekend evening last January and February looking for this bird and dipped every time. Nice to finally get it in the bag.

I suspect that there will be very few if any additions to my 2023 year list after today's addition:-

2040 - Grey-faced Petrel

All the best

After seeing a Snow Goose on December 17, birding became rather slow and I thought I was done for the year. However, while scouting locations for tomorrow’s start to the new year, I picked up what is likely my last addition to this year’s list.

579. Canvasback

Dave

My yearlist finished on 2,045 species plus Ross's Goose, Helmeted Guineafowl & Black-rumped Waxbill that eBird did not give me. (The latter I considered to be a Category C population in Spain....) 51 were heard only & I photographed 1,815 species. (That last number will be checked when I finish editing my 2023 pics.)

The 2024 effort starts in around 9 hours.

All the best

A week in Dorset to finish the year provided four final ticks, including one lifer. Perhaps if the weather had been better I might have found more and though it's kind of a shame not to make 500, it's still a lot more than I thought I'd get this year.

489. Slavonian Grebe
490. Common Goldeneye
491. Long-tailed Duck*
492. Black-throated Diver

I need to catch up on Pennys adventures

But in final response to this thread my yearly total was 112
Not anywhere near some peoples but a record year of 'identified' birds for me with some really common exclusions...(but that bodes well for this year) and some lifers
even if only in terms of positively IDing them including
Garganey
Smew
Montagus Harrier - confirmed ID by others - beautiful but just two fleeting glimpses...
Common Gull - i know ive seen these lots but never really identified them
European Turtle Dove
Northern Wheater - possibly my favourite bird of the year!

Its nice to note my skills are improving but you cant get out and about finding birds
