I am going on holidays to Krabi in the last week of June this year and would like to do a couple of days of bird photogaphy while there. Can anybody suggest good localities and target birds.
Thanx

get a trip into the mangroves

they are geared up for birders - Mr Dai used to be the man to take you - he knows all the top birds and best spots

also quite close is Khao Nor Chuchi - the site for Gurney's Pitta.

The last week of June isn't a time that many people go birding in Thailand, so it would be really interesting to know what you see at that time of year. I would really appreciate receiving the trip reports/lists from both of your trips to put on my website thaibirding.com.

The mangroves should provide some decent birds at that time of year, but the mudflats will have few birds, although if this is your first trip to the region they'll be plenty of common species to find. Khao Nor Chu Chi is the place to go but in the last few years the trails have been closed to prevent disturbance to Gurney's Pitta. I don't know if this will happen again this year.

Here are directions to some bird stakeouts around Krabi

Tiger Cave

Jungle Mynas

and Oriental Bay Owl on Phuket

get a trip into the mangroves

Did this 3 years ago and had trouble with the boat. They use what are called "longtails" A fully exposed automotive engine with a long shaft connected to a propeller. They are extrememly loud and vibrate badly. Because of marginal reliablity/unreliability the boat operators do not like to turn them off. Recommend you discuss the need to turn engines off (so you can use binoculars) before leaving.

More Thailand advice...I know it's cheap :)
We birded a small reserve east of Krabi about 30 km designated for the Gurney's Pitta. Got there late and stayed too short a time (missed the Pitta), but thought it had a lot of promise. They do have accomodation, but can't help with the specs.

Also, Three years ago, we stayed in a lovely bamboo hut ($10 USD in high season) at a place called Green Park in Ao Nang (just east and much nicer than Krabi from an aesthetics point of view). We had a Blue-winged Pitta under the cabins toward the creek each evening. Had a cobra too, but that's another story...

And finally, don't discount renting a scooter while in Thailand, they ran about $8/day and gave us the freedom to reach birding locations without having to rely on unpredictable public transportation systems.

Sounds like a great trip! Have fun. -Katie.
